Vitamin D
Helping the body absorb calcium.
After activation in the liver and mainly the kidneys, vitamin D helps the intestine absorb calcium and supports normal bone mineralization. It also participates in muscle and immune function. The skin can produce vitamin D with ultraviolet exposure, but sunlight is not a precise dosing method.
Conceptual illustration, not a molecular structure. Nutrients work together; each has distinct roles.
Make the connection
Connect the nutrient to its role, rather than treating it as a promise of better performance.
Find it in food
Examples, not a complete list. Amounts vary by food and preparation; check labels on fortified foods.
Keep the context
Excess vitamin D from supplements can raise blood calcium and damage kidneys. Do not use prolonged unprotected sun exposure as a vitamin D strategy.
These pages support learning, not diagnosis or a personalized supplement plan. Symptoms alone cannot identify a nutrient deficiency. A clinician or registered dietitian can help assess individual needs.

Does an essential nutrient mean everyone needs a supplement?
No. Essential means the body needs it. Whether a supplement is useful depends on dietary intake, absorption, life stage, health conditions and medicines.
